In 1997, a periodontal infected

tooth  had a root resected to

eliminate the advancing infection.

The tooth is still viable 7 years later.

Restorative Care

A tooth or teeth that have cavities, old looking fillings, fractures, are worn, discolored or have had RCT (root canal) need to be restored to a more healthy form and proper function. The art and science of restoring teeth in harmony with other teeth, gum tissue, facial muscles and TMJ’s (tempro-mandibular joint) is restorative dentistry.

Teeth are restored with a desire to maintain tooth structure, and be aesthetically pleasing. These three teeth, plagued by decay under old existing silver fillings, were restored with a gold inlay, porcelain cap, and a gold cap on an upper second molar.

Using the latest techniques and finest materials, Dr. Avis helps patients choose the best restorative material for each situation considering gold, tooth colored fillings or silver amalgam.

Aesthetic Services

Aesthetic dentistry is not a separate service in Dr. Avis’s practice, but a fundamental consideration in each and every restorative/reconstructive procedure. The key elements in his overwhelming success with patients in regard to creating natural looking teeth and beautiful smiles are careful listening, meticulous planning and working with one of our nation’s finest laboratory technicians, Paul Federico. Paul and Dr. Avis spend several hours together each week planning cases, reviewing digital photos of their collaborative work and developing presentations for their teaching endeavors. In addition, Paul and Dr. Avis take almost all of their postdoctoral education together! This unusual professional commitment and personal friendship ensures that this team stays on the cutting edge with respect to aesthetic principles, techniques and materials. In turn, their patients receive beautiful aesthetic dentistry that is also in functional and biologic harmony; beautiful results that feel good and last!

Implant Dentistry

Implant dentistry allows Dr. Avis to restore a missing tooth, several teeth or an entire mouth with prostheses closely matching natural teeth. It involves placing a synthetic (titanium alloy) root in the jaw bone and then fabricating a crown, crowns or denture over the implanted root.  The implant is the foundation which you don’t see, but which supports the overlying teeth.

While many general dentists are involved with making prosthetics, (i.e. crowns to fit over implants), very few have the knowledge, training, experience, and skilled team to provide the entire scope of care from planning, to surgery, to the ultimate, natural looking teeth!

Dr. Avis and his staff are most proud of this extraordinary service. Dr. Avis has been involved with implant dentistry since 1987, and was fortunate to be mentored by his father, Dr. Ronnie Avis, a pioneer in implant surgery and reconstruction.  During his career, Dr. Avis has completed numerous postdoctoral educational seminars, including two year-long programs.  He is a recognized Fellow in the International Congress of Oral Implantology, Associate Fellow in the American Academy of Implant Dentistry and lectures to other dentists on this discipline.

Conscious Sedation

Oral Conscious Sedation is a process whereby a patient’s anxiety and/or fears are completely dissipated through the use of oral medications.

The use of oral sedation began in the 1870’s.  The current protocol and medications are time tested and extremely safe. The medications are given orally and have a very wide therapeutic zone of safety.
With oral sedation you can expect all fear and apprehension to be gone prior to treatment.  You will be comfortable throughout the procedure and often times will have little sense of time and minimal recollection of the visit.

Dr. Avis and his clinical team have all been through extensive training in sedation dentistry and have already helped many patients either overcome fear or comfortably tolerate long procedures.

Furthermore, the combination of Dr. Avis’s use of conscious sedation with his advanced clinical skills in restorative dentistry, implant dentistry, periodontal care, oral surgery and root canal therapy, enables his patients to have most of their dental needs met while in a relaxed state.

Periodontal Services

The Avis team has over 50 years of combined experience in treating periodontal (gum) disease. Healthy gums are important since the tissue and underlying bone are the foundation for a healthy mouth. In addition, periodontal disease has been linked to heart disease and lung problems.

Dr. Avis and his experienced hygienist,  Dawn Christie, are trained to treat and manage both simple and advanced periodontal disease. They will also assist healthy patients in maintaining their “clean” status through regularly scheduled preventative maintenance visits.

The Avis team uses a variety of treatments to eliminate or manage periodontal disease. When indicated, non-surgical treatments using root planning and scaling, and the very latest medications (antibiotic irrigants and rinses) can be quite effective. With patients who present a more progressive stage of periodontal disease, Dr. Avis is trained and experienced in both conventional periodontal surgery as well as advanced bone regeneration procedures.

With the advances in medications, instrumentation, bone regeneration and implant dentistry, the possibilities and outcomes for people with moderate to advanced periodontal disease have greatly improved!

A severely infected tooth (below) was extracted before all bone was destroyed by its chronic infection. The bone was preserved using dental implants and a porcelain crown.

Root Canal Therapy

The most common cause of a toothache comes from nerve pain in a tooth. Whether from an accident, a deep cavity, multiple fillings, or excessive grinding and clenching, nerves in teeth may become irreversibly inflamed and irritated. When this occurs, pressure in the tooth is created without any way out. This can cause severe pain.

Root Canal Therapy lets patients keep teeth that might otherwise need extraction. The process involves removing the nerve tissue while leaving the remaining tooth structure intact. Teeth with root canals often have the same longevity as other teeth.

Dr. Avis’s involvement with restoring severely debilitated teeth inspired him to advanced training in root canal therapy. Dr. Avis uses the most modern rotary and electronic instrumentation. This means the great majority of root canals are provided painlessly. Furthermore, procedures that used to take three to four visits are now typically finished in one to two visits.

TMD Therapy

Temporo-mandibular dysfunction (TMD) is an inclusive name for a broad range of problems associated with TMJ, an acronym for the “temporo-mandibular joint.”

These two joints can be felt just forward of the ears at the point where the lower jaw joins the skull. As with other joints in the body, problems may occur with the cartilage, ligaments, lubricating fluid, boney surfaces or the controlling muscles.

Frequently reported symptoms related to TMD are:

  • Clicking, popping or grating sounds in the TMJ
  • Limited opening
  • Generalized facial pain
  • Pain in area of the TMJs
  • Headaches
  • Tired feeling in the jaw
  • Difficulty chewing
  • A bite that is uncomfortable
  • Excessive wear of tooth enamel

Prior to treatment, a specific diagnosis must be made. Depending on the diagnosis, treatment might range from a soft diet and medications to bite splint therapy, or even surgery. However, the vast majority of TMJ cases can be managed without surgery.

A careful examination and analysis of each patient’s TMJ is a standard part of our comprehensive exam process. All adult patients who   choose to have a comprehensive examination, receive a thorough TMJ evaluation as well. We believe that ensuring harmony among the joints, facial musculature, teeth and their supporting structures (i.e. bone, gums) is essential for enabling people to maintain optimal oral health for a lifetime.

Dr. Avis has a strong educational background in the area of TMD. His training began during his doctoral studies at Georgetown University under the guidance of Dr. Peter Neff. After Georgetown, Dr. Avis studied TMD extensively with Dr. Peter Dawson, Dr. Mark Piper and the L.D. Pankey Institute, regarded internationally as several of the foremost authorities on TMD. Furthermore since 1998, Dr. Avis has taught diagnosis and non-surgical treatment of TMD at The Center for Predictable Restorative Dentistry.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank you and your staff for the friendly and courteous environment you give your patients. I especially appreciate your willingness to listen to me and to take my fears seriously. Since I was a child, I have had a gagging sensation when going to the dentist. Over the years, this has resulted in the loss of teeth since I could not find a dentist that could work on me. I can now say that the tow days I spent with you and your staff were comfortable and I had no gagging whatsoever. This is truly amazing to me. I now have the needed work completed on my teeth."
